1. February: Merit
Scholarship for class V at sub-divisional
level
The examination is conducted at nine
sub-divisions, usually in the second / third
week of February. Students who have stood
First, Second and third in class V annual
exam in their respective sub-divisions
appear for this examination. The exam is
conducted under the supervision of AD
(Sub-division) and under the observation of
respective SDM. The question paper is set by
Exam Cell with the help of experts and
contains items on English, Social Studies,
Math and Science (Total 100 marks). Paper
assessment is done centrally by (Exam Cell) |

2. March – April:
C.B.S.E. Theory and Practical Examinations.
CBSE Theory Exams are held in the month of
March for Class X and Class XII. Question
Papers are sent by CBSE Board, New Delhi.
There are 29 approved centres for this exam.
Papers are sent to Guwahati Regional Office
for evaluation. For the conduct of Practical
Exams in Physics, Chemistry, Biology,
Geography and Vocational Courses, Department
appoints External Examiners. These
Examiners, in consultation with Internal
Examiners, set the question and they
evaluate answer- script also and marks are
sent to Board. |

3. May - June:
Common Entrance Test (CET) for the selection
of candidates for MBBS, B.E. and other
allied courses. |
|
| |
Papers for this exam are
set by the Department with the help of
external agency and the exam is usually held
in the month of May. Physics and Chemistry
(One Paper) is compulsory. For BE Course
Mathematic and for MBBS course Biology
papers are compulsory. However, a student
can opt for both the courses. The scheme of
negative marking has been introduced from
2008 omwards. |

CET is forwarded to Scholarship Section of
HRDD Department for the allotment of seats.
Forms for the CET are made available in the
month of March – April. |

4. November: State
Level National Talent Search Exams (NTS) for
the student of Class VIII.
This exam is conducted to select 25 students
reading in class VIII who will appear for
National Level Exams for award Merit
Scholarship of Govt. of India. For the State
Level Exam, Question papers are sent by
NCERT, New Delhi, and papers are evaluated
in New Delhi. This exam is conducted
sometime in the month of May next year. |

Further, form 2008
onwards National Merit cum Means Scholarship
Exam (NMMS) is conducted for student
studying in class VIII. There are two
eligibility criteria for this examination;
these are: 1. students should have secured
55% (50% for ST and SC) marks in class VII
annual exam. 2. Parental income should not
be more than Rs.1.5 lakhs per annum. There
are altogether 58 scholarships allotted for
the State of Sikkim with the following
district- wise breakup: |

Both of these two exams,
namely NTS and NMMS, are conducted on the
same day (usually either second or third
Sunday of November) with the same set of
question papers. However, students are
allowed to opt only one exam. |

5. November – December: Class
VIII Board and Annual Examination for other
classes (from classes IV to IX) |
|
| |
Question Papers for all
these classes are prepared by Exam Cell.
Answer script for Class VIII are centrally
evaluated after coding the papers and
results are made ready before the re-opening
school after winter break. For other classes
answer scripts are evaluated by schools
themselves and result are prepared by the
schools. |

COMMON ENTRANCE TEST (CET) |
|
| |
In the month of May 2009, the common
Entrance Test (C.E.T) for MBBS/BE Quota seats was
conducted. The test was initiated in 2004. This year i.e. in
2009, a total of 765 candidates appeared for the C.E.T., of
which 253 students appeared for MBBS Course,290 students
appeared for BE Course and the rest for both the courses.
The total expenditure incurred on this Programme was Rs
60,000. |

NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH EXAMINATION - 2008-09 |
|
| |
The State Level Talent Search Examination
is held in the month of November every year. The meritorious
students from schools are allowed to sit for the Test. The
top 25 students from the merit list, each from class VIII
and X are selected for National Level Talent Search
Examination which is held in the month of May. The
successful candidates at the national level are awarded
scholarship up to Ph.D. level depending upon academic
excellence.

ANNUAL AND SJHS BOARD EXAMINATION – 2008-09 |
|
| |
In November – December the class IV to IX
examinations the class VII Junior High School Board
Examinations are held annually. |
|

To improve the general standard of
education by introducing uniformity in the evaluation system
and for ensuring the coverage of the entire syllabus, the
Department undertook the task of setting up of common
question papers for classes IV to IX from the academic
sessions 2003 – 2004 onwards. But this year onwards, the
government has decided to give more responsibility to
the Complex Organizers, Heads of Schools and teachers by
decentralizing the process of examination system, except for
classes V and VIII. This is informed to all four districts
and schools vide Notification No: 293/DIR/HRDD/SE dated
27/7/09.The total number of candidates who appeared for SJHS
Examination in 2008-09 was 8269 of which 5720 candidates
passed giving the pass percentage of 69.17%.Expenditure
incurred for the conduct of this examination is Rs 6.50
lakhs(excluding the cost of printing the question paper) |

Merit/Prerna scholarship examination: |
|
| |
In February 2009, the merit scholarship
examination was held in 9 sub-division of the state for
awarding merit scholarship at the elementary stag. A total
of 54 students are selected every year for the award of
general merit and Prerna Scholarship. Six students, three on
merit and three from amongst the girls, are nominated from
each sub-division for the award of scholarships. This year
about 484 students appeared for the said examination. The
expenditure involved was approximately Rs.55,350 |
